You really should seal the ends of the pipe, especially if you will be arcing farther than the length of the secondary. Otherwise you can get an arc inside which will cause a carbon track and ruin your secondary. Also, you must be absolutely sure that your ground connections, wires, bolts, etc. do not run inside the base of your secondary.

Lexan would be good, but just about any plastic will work as long as it isn't black. I usually use silicon to attach the disc to the end (you really only need to do the top) since it insulates well and fills all the cracks.

Huh. I never thought about sealing the end of the secondary to protect it, I just did it because I had to. I have accomplished 2.5x secondary spark length with 3/4" plywood sealing the ends and no problems at all. That was 50" with a 20" secondary. I'll bet plexiglass would work just fine if lexan is too expensive.
They're seroius about not letting wires and bolts extend down in the secondary. This happened to one of my first coils because I let the secondary wire hang down in the tube.
BTW, vasil meant that a rounded rotor would be safer. I agree.

I have read on other threads about the shortcomings of having the wires on the end of the secondary inside of the form and the need to seal the ends of the form. I have never sealed the ends other than having a piece of plywood covering the top and the bottom setting on a glass MO tray. I’m new to building coils, but I can’t understand why fresh air would be our enemy
As you can see, I don’t leave much wire inside the coil, enough to get the job done with a little slack. And even with my salt water/wine bottle cap. I routinely make streamers that are twice the length of the secondary and have never had a problem. Maybe I’ve just been lucky.

I would say you should be ok. Although cracked tar might be a sign of prevoius abuse
I am not sure it the second pic is supposed to be showing the weld (which is normal) of just the tar, but it looks ok to me. At the top the tar isn't really important, it just needs to protect arround the hv secondaries...
