Schematic for HV ignition coil driver ?

I use a very similar circuit for my ignition coil driver,
The 390 pF is a suspicious value!
(hundreds of kilohertz!!!!!!)
There are typically two good operating frequencies;
1) The resonant frequency of the ignition coil loaded secondary
- this gives very high voltage at (around) 35 kHz
- you WILL kill the coil due to hf currents
2) Around 100 to 1000 pulses per second (depending on coil type and supply voltage)
Start with the 390 pF capacitor changed to about 1 uF
start with both variable resistors set to about 1 kOhm
CAREFULY increase the resistance of the upper variable resistor
the power/voltage out will increase,
check for overheating of transistor or coil
(with the power OFF or you will get a shock!)
fine-tune the performance by adjusting both variable resistors

If you have the means to measure the inductance and resistance of the primary, you can readily calculate the time constant. T=L/R.

Your core will be fully magnetized in five time constant periods, but in practice anything between say, two and three time constants will give you 90% of your maximum.

As Sulaiman has just pointed out, in practice, and depending on your particular coil, this will correspond to an excitation frequency in the range of hundreds of Hz.

I measured the resonant frequency of the secondary of an ignition coil I had to hand by sticking it in one collector leg of an emitter coupled two PNP transistor oscillator, and found it to oscillate at a wandering 900Hz - 1kHz. This coil has a primary time constant of 500uS - corresponding to a 1kHz squarewave - so clearly the secondary resonance has been designed to compensate for the reduced dwell-time at higher speeds.

I think it is ocilating to fast, i did something similar but using a inductor for a boost converter. it worked with a .022uf cap.
