First: Hola! Im new here, but dont worry, ive looked thru the board, and couldnt find a thread that seemed to answer my questions.
Ive tried the schematic shown on penguinslab.com (which atm seems to be down?), but.. I cant make it "run". I can get a nice spark at about 60kV, but it wont run.. It seems like the MOSFET stay on the On-state when i apply power (12V), and only drops to 0 when i turn it off.
So basicly i can only make it spark when i apply power and remove it right after.
Its a basic build with a 555 oscillating and driving a power MOSFET, but something seems to be wrong - but i cant figure out what.
Im using an oil-free ignition coil - could that be problem? If any of you have a working schematic, then feel free to post it.

Sounds like the oscillator is busted. Did you use a socket for the 555 IC or did you solder to it directly? Heat kills ICs, maybe the 555 is broken. And make sure you soldered everything correctly, of course.

CompWiz --> Got a link for that? ^^
Firnaqzen --> I use a test-board. As far as i can see, the 555 is working just fine. With an oscilloscope i can see the cycle, and i can change the duty cycle too (pot meter). At the output from the MOSFET, it swaps between 1½-12V - i have no idea why i wont go all the way to 0.
When it arcs, i get some noise on the ground - approx 500V peaks.

Your original schematic tends to work very well; I would at least get it working since you are already mostly done. That way you can see if it at least satisfies your needs. If its not powerful enough, then start working on a new driver.
