The Navy has tested the 32MJ railgun built by BAE Systems, we make CNC machines for them. It achieved 10.6MJ of muzzle energy, accelerating the projectile to Mach 7.5.
The 64MJ one will probably take 13 years to bring online, a test of material sciences for sure.
Looks like the projectile mass comes out to about 3.3kg

Amazing! That thing is huge! I wonder how in the world they triggered such a pulse. I don't think any SCR on earth could handle that kind of power. And speaking of power, I wish the website would give some sort of information on the capacitor bank used.

I dont see whats up with the hype about this gun. Looks like a normal big railgun that still has the usual problems with rail erosion that make it pretty much useless as a replacement for large naval cannons. It's cool though.

You cant use any known superconductor in a railgun because they will saturate from strong magnetic fields and stop (totally or partially) superconducting.

I saw the video, but I am curious why a device that does not use explosives as a propellant has a projectile with a trail of fire? Is this from the friction as the projectile leaves the cannon? I saw the fire and explosion on the video at the link:

Metals are quite capable of sustained combustion if heated to a sufficient temperature and mixed appropriately with oxygen (thermite, anyone?). I'd wager 32,000,000 joules does a pretty efficient job of vaporizing the rails and projectile, providing plenty of fuel for a fire.
Think of it as taking the sparks seen in most amateur railguns one step further.
