My flyback came in today, and I have only positive things to say. They are very sturdy physically, and work extremely well at only 12Vin on my ZVS driver. There was enough room for me to wind a 5+5 primary out of 14 gauge insulated! And I like that pretty much any of the pins will work as ground; they only differ in resistance from the HV+ lead (well I guess technically I can't say "HV+" lead for an AC flyback...) by about 30 ohms.

Here's a few pics of it running at 12Vin:
1202346868 690 FT38115 100 3186
Arcs start at ~1.5" and can be stretched to 3".

1202346868 690 FT38115 100 3190
And a small plasma globe.

Tomorrow I'll get some new variac fuses, but right now I'm limited to a 12V lead-acid battery. I can't wait to crank this thing up!

Cool plasma globe!

Can't wait to see what performance you can achieve with it.

I got some new fuses, and when I turned up the voltage the flyback secondary arced over internally and began to smoke. A lot. I was running with a 5+5 primary and 25VDC into the ZVS driver. The flyback still works fine at lower voltages, but I'm planning on placing it in a sealed oil box anyway before going any further.

Just a warning to anyone who plans on doing something similar.

I should've told you that I had to do some work to get it to work with much higher voltages, but of course I wasn't running a ZVS driver!

Less amps, more volts, and it probably would've been fine. The excessive wattage probably caused some issues.

Oh, a halfbridge of irfp460's driven by gate drivers. I made sure to limit the amperage draw. At higher voltages I noticed some of the external wires arcing to the core (from the other windings). However I didn't notice any arcing internally in the main HV winding.

I can send you another one for less than 10 bucks if you want, especially since you didn't have much time to play with it before the internal arcing. Just send me a PM and we can arrange something.

today my flybacks came i ordered 5 cheesey and they are absolutely brand new the only thing i can find wrong with them is that the outer rubber is very britle from age but some corona dope will fix that right up and that shouldent effect the performance at all but overall very good product for the money.

I never noticed any brittle rubber? The black rubber around the disc shouldn't be brittle at all - it should almost feel malleable.

I have about 16 of these flybacks left! If you purchase more than 5 I'll give you 10% off the total (not including shipping). The shipping rate for multiple items has changed - it's now 5+3/4th(n).

Hey Logan, did you ever figure out which posts were the feedback coil and which 2 were the primary?

On the one I had, the rubber was very malleable. You could dig your fingernails into it...

About the pins, on mine all the pins were connected to the HV lead by some level of resistance between 290 and 320 ohms. I got the impression that they were all taps on a single coil, and all arced readily to the HV lead.

Just my $0.02

EDIT: Oh and BTW what is that zip-tied piece of high voltage wire it came with for?
