Thanks for the ideas. The thing is that I'm actually looking to make the ladder with the absolute minimum of modifications and 0 external parts. It's for an article that I'm working on.
Now, I'm getting a bunch of arcing on the circuit board. Very cool but very bad. I don't understand why this is happening at all. It was my understanding that the HV was coming out of the flyback and so wouldn't affect the board. Where else is HV being made?

So, could you still remove the flyback from the assembly, or would that qualify as more than minimum modifications? It would make things a whole lot easier. From there, you could build a simple driver based on the HOT from the monitor.
