Hey all, i'm new to the site. (I bet people are rolling their eyes at another naive newbie) but I plan to try and learn and have done a fair bit of reading up on the net about tesla coils. Now trying to talk about tesla coils to people where I live usually ends in them bringing up red alert so its hard for me to be sure if i'm doing the right thing. So thanks to deepfriedneon, i've come up with a rough plan and would just like to know if it sounds plausible to you guys.
Well i've got a 9kv 100mA NST. Here is a rough break up on the specs:
Secondary diameter: 150mm Secondary height: 660mm Secondary wire thickness: 0.7068mm including enamel (22 gauge) Number of turns: 930 Toroid: horizontal diameter = 380mm, vertical diameter = 100mm Resonant frequency: 188.016kHz
Optimum tank capacitance: 0.0353uF
Primary diameter: 200mm Wire thickness: 10mm Turn spacing: 8mm Number of turns: 7
Now if no one can see any obvious flaws in the design, i'll start part collecting and give it a shot. Now I want to build an MMC however living in Australia makes it really difficult to get the proper caps so ebay is really my only hope as far as I know. There are many different types, polyethylene, ceramic disc, polystyrene, doorknob etc...

Hey Smiley, note that capacitance is the resonant capacitance, so you'd be best off using 1.4-2 times that value. For caps, I buy them from here not cheap but the proper thing. Type in ER - Capacitor, Polypropylene Film, High dV/dt, 3000v

Thanks goldsphere, that website is great, its cheaper than buying the same Cornell-Dubilier caps from overseas. Only problem is I dont have an ABN so cant register :S
i could help you out there my folks have a electronics repair busness and thy used to deal with RS im sure i can get some caps for you (although my folks will want a small mark up)

thanks Cain, but I think i've worked it out. You have to give an ABN if opening an account however, by registering, you dont have to and can still add your payment details and address.

I bought some caps some time back without an ABN so I know it works just fine. If you later get into building SSTCs then they also have all the things like mosfet drivers and the like too. Can I ask you why you chose 0.7mm wire for the secondary? I would have gone about 0.4mm

I think I chose 7mm because I had read somewhere that its not best to use higher than 22 guage. However if you think its ok, i'll use a smaller mm cable. Just means a few re-calculations.
Hey, I just realised your from Melbourne, what area you from?

I think about 1100-1200 turns is good. You could use 0.5mm wire and get a couple hundred extra turns with it. I'm in Preston, but soon moving to the country, and giving the city the flick.
