You probably ought to try looking for a supply to match your lasing unit.

My supply, which is not continuous output by the way but pulsed, has a very large storage capacitor, 120uF at several kv, so no matter what you do the value is going to be pretty large.

You're just calculating for ripple and getting 30uF, well what happens when you discharge it in your system? You need a cap bigger still to handle discharging AND ripple reduction.

If you're going for a transformer-rectifier setup you would need the 3 phase arrangement because single phase will give you ripple of 35%-45%. Then you would need to have a large maybe 100uF 18kvdc filter cap, feeding a HV choke, then another HV filter cap. What you would probably end up with is a supply that blows itself out from the transient surge if you're not careful with ballasting.

If I were in your position I would call it a research project and have college foot the bill. Then call up Plastic Capacitors and see what they can do for you.

Have you looked at inductive filtering on the output? As only the ripple voltage appears across the inductor, it would not need any special HV construction other than floating the whole thing above ground.
