I would also suggest putting less "topload" on there. Those 2 cookie tins are pretty large. I found my SSTCs work best with a pretty small toroid, maybe 8-12" diameter max.
8 turns sounds pretty good for CW mode with 120VAC (165VDC) input. Are you running full mains voltage input yet? Keep in mind that audio-modulated coils typically arent big spark producers. If you want longer sparks, run it with half-wave DC input and maybe 4 primary turns. Thats is how i used to run my full-bridge coils for about 20-24" sparks. Keep in mind the power consumption is large, at about 2kVA for those spark lengths.

I don't own anything to lower the voltage, so I went from 12VDC, 24VDC, 120 w/ lightbulb in series, and then 120VAC. I have to dig up a plug and unplug the dryer (moms not going to be happy) before I can try 240.
I haven't gotten the audio to work yet. Right now its running from a bridge rectifier. I haven't put a capacitor for filtering in, but shouldn't I hear something when I connect an audio signal? Or is the 120Hz hum way louder than the audio would be? The audio signal is fed into pin 4 of the TL494 through a capacitor. It did have an effect on the pulse widths on my scope, but I cannot hear anything.
Edit:
Now I seem to have burnt out the 12V transformer while the power switch was off and it was only supplying 15mA to a LED......strange. I have lifted so many traces off this board and blown 3 sets of MOSFETS before I even got my first spark (although they are surviving fine now that I stopped connecting the oscilloscope). How much does the average SSTC cost? This is getting way too expensive.

Can someone please verify the circuit will work for audio modulation? I can't seem to get any audio out fo the coil at all, even though the audio signal is effecting the pulse width.
Edit
Well, never mind the audio.. I tried hooking it up to 240, and blew up another set of transistors... This is getting too expensive..the coils going into storage for a while...
