I dont have a NST or any money to purchase even a cheap on from ebay. So ive opted out for the MOT design, even thought the current isent really appealing, its all i got.

Thanks but i dont consider a SSTC to be a true TC and see little reason to build one.

Oh Ya! another MOTTC Me too cheesey But if You're worried about current on the mains side I'd build a SSTC. It runs and Ignition coil thus running the Tesla coil, still a SGTC but still SS. Little bit of both eh! and olny about one amp-ish off the mains(120/60hz)! i got some nice arcs off that setup...

By the way I love teslamap!!! its awsome.

It's not that I don't think you guys are doing a great job with your TC calculators, I think they're wonderful. It's just that to really get everything right is more of an art right now then a science, and the calculators are too scientific.

I am doing my best right now to quantify things that are happening. I'm trying to do spice modeling, and I want to do some Matlab stuff too, its just that nailing everything down is very difficult.

A lot of people have different multipliers depending on static gaps versus rotary gaps I know, but what I'm finding is that the static gap figure works better for a rotary then the rotary cap size. This size being 1.6- almost 1.8xCres. I have noticed a drop in performance at 1.8xCres, so I try to stay at about 1.6-1.7xCres.

I am VERY aware of losses. That's what I'm combating right now. For a system of <300W I can say that using Belden 40KV wire is fine, but when you go >300W it heats up too much, which can be a tremendous loss. In this case I am shortening all my leads and going with 12GA silver teflon.

I am also scoping things out with my potential divider and looking into behavior more in depth. Now that I have a storage scope I can really get my feet wet.
Before I had problems with my BK because the trace became very dim at the sweep rates I needed, but Tek's don't suffer from this problem, so I'm okay.

If I can come up with satisfactory results I will give them to you and try to help improve things as best as I can rather then just being another critic. I didn't want to come off as saying its not good enough, I'm just trying to caution the reader that there is a lot of 'play' and 'comprimise', and that I'm still working with these issues.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Hazmatt_(The Underdog) I agree with your view of calculation programs like TeslaMap. I'll be the 1st to admit that TeslaMap cannot design a Tesla coil with complete accuracy. There are just too many variables to deal with. Every Tesla coil is different and the number of potential designs are infinite. Even the smallest things can make a difference in the system (and Tesla coils have a lot of little things). But that drawback is also the beauty of Tesla coil design. You can do all the calculations, you can copy other working coils, you can know everything there is to know about Tesla coils - but when you throw that switch for the first time you never know what you'll get. Thats my favorite part of building coils! TeslaMap was designed to get you close, but only dedication and patience will make a great coil.
