if you just need to make it work to pass the class use Steve ward's micro sstc driver-should cost about $3 in parts (you already have the fets)) Just as long as you always stay under 50v you should be able to get decent sparks in about an hour (assuming you can use your existing secondary). I could ship you the parts to the micro sstc driver for $5 (not including the fets, transformers, primary/secondary/12v regulator (all out of them)).
I wouldn't worry about the gdt being on the bottom, just as long as you did not mix up the leads. Speaker wire should work fine for just about anything.
As to testing fets: My favorite method is (looking at the feet with the pins down and the part number facing you): set the meter to ohms range (in not auto ranging the highest scale) Put black probe on the left hand pin, and the red on the right hand one. If any continuity it is dead. Take the black probe on the middle pin, and red on the right pin. This should read continuity. Take black probe on right pin, red on the middle. If continuity it is dead. Take black probe on the right, red on the left. If continuity it is dead. Take the black probe on the right and red in the middle (same as step 2)-this should now read continuity.

looks easyenough to build, my secondary is to big though isnt it? (not that i cant build a smaller one real quick if needed)
I was also thinking ahead of myself in trying to make a tesla coil more art then science fair. How many fluorescent bulbs u think a average size would light?

I havent worked with a mosfet before but knowing somewhat of what they do and durability, they should of smoked or something or at least got ot correct or could they just crap out without me knowing?

More often than not, when they crap out, they crap out with all three pins shorted together to < 1ohm, and you get coloured smoke. You'll almost definitely know it.
Sometimes they just go 'click' and you've got to meter them and put in new ones. =)

Are the FETs in-circuit when you measure? In that case, the GDT winding would represent a small impedance across gate and source. This would read continuity on a multimeter.
