Hmmmm Then one would ponder how well this circuit would translate into a SS or VTTC.

i have managed to get quite good results by using a 555 driver and placing the audio signal via a 10nf capacitor to pin 5 of the 555.

I did the same and damaged two ne's... can you advise what could be wrong? mosfet becomes hot and after disconnecting input signal [from radio] generator doesn't work...+ of audio through capaciator to 5 pin, ground to ground. I use this circuit and irfp 250 instead of 510

Maybe you could put a 7812 regulator, even when running off 12V. Be sure to use a filter cap (>1000uF). The flyback can generate some spikes to the circuit and the 555 doesn't like them. I used a regulator and it's running just fine. And btw, you could remove the 2N2222 part. The 555 has enough power to drive the FET directly.

Here's my setup. Works quite well with 555+BUZ21. Not great quality, though.

That flyback is quite a monster. It can produce 5 cm arcs at 12V 3A input.
Here's also a closeup to the board. Perfboard is quite nice, you can make very tight layouts on it smile

glad you guys posted these... when school starts back up, I planned to make some music ^_^

does anyone know if it would be safe to use a MIDI keyboard to control sound? (sry for asking in your thread)

I control it via my computer screen, as it has integrated speakers and a headphone jack (so some kind of an amplifier inside). I just control mine from the headphone output.

I used ATX as a power source and there were not problems with it until I started experimenting with audio modulation... so probably it isn't because of power source or spikes, I think. Any other suggestions? Strange, so easy and doesn't work... maybe this configuration doesn't work with exactly this circuit? or it needs modification? could you also post your circuit?

that means? ATX supplies driver directly with 12V... mosfet is supplied with an car battery charger transformer, approximately 16V with 10000uF capacitor

I don't think any isolation is needed. Many people including me have driven those from MP3 players without any problems. My MP3 player doesn't have enough output power to get good sound volume, though. Here's a YouTube video of my creation: Link2
