In my setup the secondary coil was loaded only by its own capacitance and the capacitance of the terminal. The terminal had a telescopic antenna mounted over it, that could be use to adjust the capacitance and fine tune the system.
You should be able to reproduce the beating waveforms with your setup. With just one coil excited by the signal generator you see the waveforms that you posted. Lower the frequency of the oscillator to allow the signal to decay more completely. Moving then the other LC tank closer the beats appear, if both circuits are approximately tuned to the same frequency, If the coupling is small, the tuning becomes critical. Try to add a variable capacitor in parallel with the fixed capacitor for fine tuning.

I started using the 'pinger' today and noted something important, I had set up the system in the wrong mode. My tap point was roughly where the ringdown showed critical damping, a fairly steep decaying exponential. I was a bit shocked by this so I moved the tap out to reproduce the beating signal and then went back and did some recalculations.

I've been tuning my coils by base feeding the RF and checking for tune on a current meter wired as a detector. The trouble is I have conflicting numbers between the self capacitence and the exact resonant frequency. So I'm going over things again. I think the trouble is that its been ~2 years since I started my work on my system and I had to do other things, so I'm trying to recover missing data.

Some pics of the system with the aid of my delaying scope:

I apologise for the quality, it had to be dark for the scope, and the camera didn't pick up the image well.
The first image is the unloaded coil, and the second is the coil terminated with the toroid.

I tried Antonio's version of the driver where the system is series fed by the pulse versus my approach which was to pulse the LC tank in a parallel mode. The differences are you will need more current for my setup, but the outputs are larger in magnitude because its not being divided capacitivily. So that's the only real benefit.

So far I am having problems not obtaining the beat pattern, but getting the coil to beat with a reasonable sized Cx in parallel. So far my primary circuit will beat with best performance while a ~56uH primary is in parallel with a .12uF capacitence. This is much too large of a tank capacitence for any small coil! I don't yet know why this situation is happening. I will have to go through some primaries and see if I have similar results. I need to get the .12uF down to a more reasonable .05 to .02 range so I can work. These kinds of things just stress me out.
