Adjustable is a real headache sometimes .. especially when you don't have tight control over the speed of the motor or a tachometer connected to the shaft, I know because my gap uses a sewing machine motor.
The sewing machine motor has a hard time controlling the inertia of the gap disk and will easily overshoot and undershoot synchronous. A synchronous motor has a lot more rotor mass and that will help regulate the speed of your flywheel. also you don't have to worry about speed setting, controlling the input for speed setting, opto tach's, feedback regulation, dwell phase lag compensation, all that extra junk. So if you're getting into doing these things and don't want the headache, then go synchronous.

I knew this day would come sooner or later. This forum is full of solid state stuff so i tought it would be nice to hear that ARSG erratic scream once again.
Today, 4 years 7months and 5 days later it lives again to die another day!
Now featuring high speed asynchronous rotary and 73nF MMC made from general atomics oil caps.
This day was far from optimal coiling weather, it was too windy. For next run i will double the mmc capacitance and maybe add larger topload. Also i will rise the base of the coil up so that rotary fits under there. It should give sparks more room to grow.
EDIT: Blaah, just realized this is not in projects secion. Mods help..? :)
