ARGH

So much for nothing. I have build this for hours and then i got 15 minutes of 16kV @ 5000W pure HV power, then i smelled that lovely burning transformer/oil smell and reason for that was the most predictable in my building history. Well, i got insulation failure in 6th stage, not 8th :)

But results before failure were so impressive that i just have to try again with few extra tricks in my mind ;) I need to drain oil, remove defective MOT and cut it open to see what caused failure. Will post pics later.

16kV and slightly over 5000W of power Link2

True :D

But sometimes you just have to get down and oily to get results :)

Oil is drained out, no visible damage or burns in transformer that failed yesterday. I replace only one which failed, others will remain.

Replacement MOT will be modified:

- HV winding is disconnected from core permanently
- Filament winding is removed permanently
- All paper based insulation are removed and replaced with plastic

I will make new insulation out of overhead projector sheets. After removing all old paper and glue there is space for about 4 to 6 layers. Both HV and LV windings will be insulated same way.

Pics:
Link2 HV winding was pretty hard to get out in one piece - but it came with some hydraulic brutality ;)
Link2 And done

Tomorrow i will buy some varnish (same stuff that i used to my TC secondary) ans put that MOT back together.

Well, i don't know what to say... thing is that this coil is dead - no more sparks with that secondary. cry

Statement of death

Born: Aug 8 2007
Passed: Sep 22 2007

Rest In Peace my little coil

----

So what happened? I added one extra stage to my MOT Stack to get 6-pack (12kV @ plenty of power) Spark intensity increased amazingly and i got what i was looking for, 200cm discharge :)

I was just taking pictures about sparks and streamers until my brother shouted that secondary is on fire and turned mains off (we ran it about 20min before failure). I couldn't see that failure myself behind the camera.

We get took stuff inside and i did quick autopsy to find out what really happened. There was two shored turns in beginning of secondary and copper wire was melted and broken! There was also some sings of arcing between pipe and winding, under varnish.

There are few reasons for this: (i think)
- I got few primary-secondary arcs because of wrong coupling when we first tested this coil in august, there was small holes in varnish but i repaired those with sanding and epoxy. (and now there is bad burn again BUT not because of secondary-primary arcing)
- Too much power for rather small coil

Life is life, now i have good reason to make taller secondary and maybe SSTC... who knows shades

OR

Get a new secondary form, wind with ~1100T and H/D 4-4.25

You were just pushing way too much power into the thinner wire is all, so get some beefier wire like 24 AWG or something.

That thicker wire was in my mind since i wound this coil.

I think i rebuild this from the scratch - Tesla1's journey ends here.

I made small video about this coil: Link2

Now its finally time for RSG but, which one you would go for:

Option 1:

fixed 1300rpm synchronous 130/260BPS RSG (i found new 1300rpm sync. motor)

OR

Adjustable 0-6000rpm asynchronous 0-400BPS RSG (that centrifuge)

Synchronous definately, as it will use the power most efficiently and the streamers are alot cooler and "meaner" smile
