Yeah. If you want a system that is mostly "it just works" one of the Ubuntu flavors is probably a good choice. Gentoo is almost as easy, if not just as easy (personal preferences, and all that) as Ubuntu. I like it because it lets me play with the guts, and if I break it I can play more to figure out what is broken. Of course, I was using Slackware linux before Gentoo, which is one step above roll-your-own-from-stock-sources. ;:)
Now if only I can figure out why top segfaults on my current kernel, but not the previous versions, with no changes but which kernel I booted from. :D

I've tried a few versions, and settled in on Mepis, since I had the least amount of hardware problems and configuration issues with it, however, the latest versions seem to like machines with a goodly amount of memory best (>256k).

I would highly recommend OpenSUSE 10.3. In Ubuntu there are lot of things and settings you have to do by editing the config files. In OpenSuse, there is a graphical setup tool called YaST. With that you can do the most you will need. Hardware support in Suse is also fine. Also now when KDE4 is soon coming out, I would personally recommend a KDE based system (although you can install KDE4 to Ubuntu as well). That's because I don't like gnome too much.
