Grrrr!!... mad don't mention 'Maplins' to me!!......lol
Seems every time i go and get some components
from them, they either 'Never' have them in stock,
or when i get home i find they have given me the
wrong values!
Yes...i was told by one of their 'just reaching puberty' assistants
that they only stock small zeners in twos!
i once had to travel miles to several branches just to get eight zeners
for my DRSSTC gate drive.
I now order by mail from CPC ,Farnell or RS.
So....not too surprised that their component section is winding down.

(breath...Breath)....lol

Mel.

settle down and take a deep breath cheesey cheesey cheesey seems like i have to buy all my capacitors from rs, dick smith don't have any high voltage capacitors, and jaycar only have 3 kv ceramics. to bad rs is so expensive, they charge something like $300 for a 1mw red laser module, when for $300 bucks, you could get a green laser over 100mw?

Yea KV, HV caps are difficult and expensive, considering you either have to order online from certain places or find in a swap meet.

I haven't had a problem finding cheap HV caps at a ham swap meet. It depends what kind of swap meet it is. Ask around or look on Google and hope there is one nearby.

On a brighter note, Jaycar had 10mW red diodes for ~$10 last time I checked.

When I was hired there, all prospective employees were given a tray of components to identify. I wonder how long they'll still do that, if they still do. Dickie Smith definitely doesn't.

At least Jaycar still hires people who have a technical mind - even if they don't know an SCR from a resistor. If you ask for advice on something decently expensive, like a sound system, alarm system or antenna, you'll get answers. Even the staff who don't care about geek stuff learn how to sell the good stuff.

Dick Smith is now owned by Woolworths and I remember back when I was a jobhunting teen that they have one job application system. They're basically looking for "checkout chicks".

Electronics itself isn't what it used to be. The technician for my physics department was recently telling me that he now uses PICs over 555 timers. Maybe one day electronic shops will only sell uCs, ready made boards and transducers.

If it's a proper Jaycar outlet (not a reseller) they'll order one in no hassle.

They have a backorder system where you pay for the product as normal and then you wait until they phone you to say you can pick it up.

For $10, that diode is a fun toy. I ran one on a simple battery-powered constant-current supply made from a small transistor and a voltage regulator. (That'll possibly make Steve cringe.)

Hamfests are a good place to find radio related components from. You can search your state below.
