I made and lit off a 5 pound KNO3/sucrose smokebomb, and a few smaller one pounders. It was great, they make these massive artificial clouds (yes that big), then when it begins to cool, depending on the wind it will decend over somebody's yard and look like thick fog.
Buying that 20 pound batch of KNO3 off of Ebay was a great investment. "For use as fertilizer only" haha, right...

The closest thing I had to a firework... That is a 2J pulse of 1um light onto a thin layer of black powder. The pulse was so short that it only vaporised a thin layer of BP, and after the shot you couldn't even tell it had been hit!
(the black thing is about .5" on a side)
But personally, I prefer the shots to plain 'ole black plastic...
An interesting thing to note with all of my explosion pics, is that the they are all done with time lapse photography, I set the exposure for a second, turn off the lights, and fire. So, that is not what the plume actually looks like but is more a history of the path the plasma ball took, all combined together. If I had taken the pic right after they shot there would be a very small/dense ball of plasma that (relatively) slowly floated away.

I lit off some Mg/KMnO4 flash... wouldn't call it powder, more like granules, in a steel cup. It's very powerful stuff that demands respect even when it isn't very finely divided. At 30g it makes a lot of concussion, bright flash, and a thick cloud of green smoke (green manganate, not exactly sure how that comes to be here but I assume it happens after the main reaction whose K2O and Mn+2 byproducts are still reactive). That's about it. I did a few other experimental propellant composition tests that worked but were not impressive enough to be considered fireworks as such. The fourth is pretty much the after-party for the rest of the week, which was fun, with lots of partying and running around and such. What better way to spend it than making lots of racket via chemical means?

I didn't get any fireworks this year. Its a 2 hour drive to the border and the prices are kind of high. Instead I entertained the kids with some improvised explosions. I took some video and posted it on youtube.
