i have found one piece of vital info about this flyback, one of the pins on the side is connected to the capacitor!!. i found this out when i turned off the power, and went to adjust the windings, then i felt a tickling felling in my finger, so i grabbed the HV lead and put it near the 3 pins, that moment a 8mm fat spark jumped to the wire and it was loud!!!. lucky i know that now!!! i find that if i make a spark before i turn it off, the cap looses it's charge. i wonder if i can put a bleeder on it, or just remove the cap altogether, i do not want to touch it!! i gather these are dc right? what would be the right spark length for this driver?

The transistor you're looking for is the HOT (horizontal output transistor), it'll be large and close to the flyback, often on the same heatsink/EMI barrier. Voltage rating will be 1000-1500V and current from 5-10 amps.
kv, you might want to upgrade to this driver. I've found the sparks change appearance dependant of which of the diode/capacitor pins I short together.

so your saying if i short some of the pins on the flyback, i will get better output? i am going to change drivers within this or next week, the one you have mentioned, does it work better?

Not necessarily better, but different. It seemed to connect an extra capacitor into the circuit. The sparks would take longer to fire, but they were much brighter. However I was using a 555 driver, which tends to spark more than arc, at least at low powers. I've never tried the circuit I posted, but it should work better. Also it only takes one more 2N3055 and a few windings, so it's not much work to construct.
building the ZVS power supply for the flyback is worth it get the transistors from ferchild as samples if you have a company. Yesterday I bet my friend I could build a louder noise maker with HV DC than a firecracker and using a old TV flyback and 12 bottle capacitors I made a constant stream of 6" fat DC arcs that were herd around the block. You should get a old TV flyback with no resistors and caps then you can have fun also build the ZVS. have fun

thanks guys, i am going to build a better driver maybe next week or on the weekend, so i will get some bigger arcs and alot less heat. for now, could i add another transistor to help with heat and power handling? this thing creats sooo much ion wind from the pins. i had a piece of tissue paper near the flyback, and when i turned it on, it blew the paper right off the table!! i think i will have to cut off the pins and fill it with resin or something. i removed the core spacers and now i can get 3cm arcs!!

Yea, thats why this makes such a great first-time project for anyone interested. Not only do you get long continuous arcs, but because the hv pins are very small in diameter (i actually sharpen mine!) you get a very directed ion wind that you can mysteriously blow stuff around with.
BTW if you have an SGTC, you can replace the power supply with the low-power flyback (not ZVS, too powerful). Mine only fires the gap at about 3 or 4 Hz, so you don't get resonance, but you can draw these neat little 4 or 5 inch Van de Graaff-type strikes. And they even feel like Van de Graaff strikes (That's right, you can touch them!). And the coolest is it only runs off a single 9-volt battery.

so if i build a SGTC with this, would i get to air streamers?what kind of current output should i get with this? this thing leaks a hell of alot of carona around the pins, so i think i will cut some of them off and fill it. i was just playing with this thing and arcing it to water, and it puts a little dent in the water from the wind. i tried to make one of those high voltage lifters with my first ignition coil driver, and it didn't work, so finally i can try again YAY!! the strange thing is that the 5w resiistor is getting hot?
well about not using the ZVS for a SG tesla coil you should look at mine I got 6" arcs from a 5" coil I was running the zvs at 40v 6A. and yes you would get air streamers.

I've had a lot of success with using a ZVS driven flyback as a SGTC power supply. I can get 6-7 inch streamers to air 8-9 inch arcs to ground running a DC flyback with a ZVS driver from 24 volts @ around 4-6 amps.
