Here's a page to find the pins on the flyback.

i hooked 9v up to pins 1 and two and pulsed it, then hooked my multimeter up to the secondary and what i think is ground. it read about 1 volt????

Just follow what the page I linked to says, I've found the pins using this method.
You first need to be sure that the 0V pin is the 0V pin.

Another way to find Gnd is by bringing the HV lead to the pins an see which one it arcs to the best.

woooohooo, it's working, sort of. i found out that i had a 27kohm resistor instead of a 270hm, but i replaced it with a 22 ohm. Secondly (i feel so stupid about this one angry ) i put the power into the wrong pin of the transistor angry angry confused. i used the internal primary, and wound my own feedback, and i got a high picthed squealing noise from the flyback. i put the hv output near pin 7 and i got little sparks. now my question is how do you get bigger sparks? new feedback? new primary? more power!? oh, i ran it off 12v 4 amps

thanks for all your help guys wink

Try reversing the polarity of the feedback.

i just tried winding my own primary(5) on it next to the feedback(3), and i got 8mm sparks, they sounded like they were a higher frequency then i could really hear and were sputtery. i can only turn it on for a couple of seconds because the transistor gets very very hot, even on a little heatsink, i'll find a bigger one to put it on. what do you think i should do for bigger sparks? different primary?, new feedback?, more power (i don't really want to blow up my transistor yet)

EDIT: WOW!!!! i just took the feedback to 2 turns, and got massive 2cm sparks!!!!! woooohooo!!! is this right for a flyback on 12v 4 amps? YAY!! would i be able to add another transistor to increase power handling and decrease heat?

Congrats smile I've never built one I also went straight to ZVS. adding another transistor I think would reduce the heat and it would help spread the load out more so you could put in more power.

so would adding another transistor work? and if it does, would i just add it where the other one is?

Does anyone know which component inside the monitor can be used in place of the 2n3055? Uzzors' pic confirms it is possible, but can anyone tell me what markings it has or where it is in relation to the flyback? I know it will have a mounted heatsink, but there's a lot of heatsinked (heatsunk?) components in there.

I only ask because I have a few old CRTs (monitors and TVs) and because 2n3055s are way overpriced at radioshack.
