That looks like the circuit off from sams site- and yes, it does work but the transistor gets very hot.

You could build a ZVS driver here. It is more efficient and produces a lot less heat.

With these new flybacks (I have two) I usually find the extra pins useless but still capable of delivering a shock. I just cut them off and cover the stubbs with epoxy.

They are both monitor flybacks, and you can tell they have a capacitor in them because even after you turn them off they can still give off a single spark [that hurts a lot].

i can't even get the flyback to make a noise, which pins do you think are the primary and feedback? just because i was bored, i hooked my flyback up to my ignition coil setup, but when i turned it off, i shorted the 3 pins down the side, and i got some little sparks off them, so they must be the cap? i also wound about 6 turns of wire on the core that was sticking out, and put 9v pulses through it, and the flyback clicked, but still no output? here is a pic of the whole flyback.

EDIT why didn't my picture appear?

There won't be a high enough voltage produced to make a spark from 9V being pulsed by hand into the flyback. You could try to connecting a neon lamp to the output while pulsing in 9V to see if the flyback works.

You need to drive the flyback at a frequency in the audible range for it to whine, just hooking it up 9V won't do a thing. For the sake of simplicity wind your own primary. If you absolutely don't want to I can almost guarantee that pins 1 and 2 are the primary, and two pins beside each other between 3 and 6 will be usable for feedback. The question mark pins are usually part of the capacitor/diode/voltage multiplier/whatever setup. One of the pins 6 - 10 will also be a ground. I suggest you start with the infamous single 2N3055 driver, quick and easy sparks.

In fact I have a picture of that driver, which was my very first. All of the components were scavenged from the same monitor.

so yours worked on 9v? i have made that simple diver circuit but it doesn't make any noise or anything. i have one of those big metal transistors. heres the circuit i'm using. but the flyback still has no output. if i was to wind my own feedback and primary, do i just make it on the piece of the core that's sticking out the side? i have the primary on pins 1 and 2, and have had the feed back on the other pins. yes i think the 3 pins on the side are from the capacitor\s because when i zapped it with my ignition coils, it held a charge and arced when i shorted them
