Old and big! Failing that, new and big is better than old and small, in my oppinion.

If you can, pick TV's rather than monitors. Because monitors usually have a flyback with built-in high voltage capacitor, they are useless for drawing arcs. Most TV's have a flyback without the HV cap.
Edit> IMO new and big without built-in HV cap is the best. These produce much longer arch for the same input power than the old unrectified ones. They are also often surprisingly tough (I have pushed ~600W through one, and my driver got hotter than the flyback.)

In old tvs the flyback had no included diode or dublier circuit and on places like ebay or information unlimited you can find flybacks with just a flying leed. Some times they put out more voltage. A flying leed is benifcial because you can chose the polarity with the circuitry that you chose. you can use one flyback to drive two dublier of opisit polarity for twice the voltage.

The thing attached to the flyback is a voltage doubler, the pots are used to focus the tv (and are useless to you)

i made up this chart, it shows which pins are connected to each other. i blew up my multimeter so i used a fan, a 9v power supply and some wires, so i couldn't get resistance measurements sad so what do you think the primary and feedback coils are? oh, and i am intending to run it with the circuit, you know, the one with the single transistor and two resistors, wil this work?

I often hear people saying that it's a voltage doubler, but I think this is not the case. The flyback's secondary is divided into several sections separated by HV diodes. The output is filtered by a HV cap (usually 2-3nF@50kV). So the cylindrical thing attached to the flyback is the HV cap, and under or beside it is the "pile" of HV diodes.

this picture is of the pin configuration. what are the 3 pins down the side for? which ones do you think are the coils? oh, i looked on the back of the circuit board where the flyback was, and found that pins 10, 8 and 3 were not used in the monitor. when i hook it up to this circuit, i can't hear anything or see anything
