Hello Paul,

Yes it turned out too windy so did a low power run in garage and was pleased :) I think I went max 80v input to bridge and on time around 200us with low breakrate around 100 I think.

Got 3' strikes at those settings no problem. I couldn't get much more than 3 feet away from coil so didn't push my luck. I think I need to scope some bits now running and see how bridge and gates look under power along with setup current limit.

Here is a vid of the run. sorry for quality as was trying to hold phone while operating it all lol

I've been wanting to get into DRSSTC's for a while now. I just found some 1400 V/ 1000A IGBT's but I'm not sure if they are suitable for a power supply or not. I hear that switching speed needs to be fast, but how fast and such I don't know. If anyone can point me in the right direction to a website that talks about IGBT sizes tried on DRSSTC systems that would be awesome.
I know these IGBT's are Powerex manufactured.

Congratulations, Colin.

Nothing like first light, eh?

-Say, that coil looks strikingly familiar in some way....

Cheers, Finn Hammer

One could say I was inspired a little by your thumper toroid;-) Mine is one continuous coil of copper tubing though so is wound in a spiral then the ends are joined.

Perhaps it's "mini thumper"

I am hoping to push around 8-9' out of the thing eventually :)

Thanks Mel, I have to confirm the 80v yet;-) this was just a guess as how far round my hand went on variac lol.

Yes toroid seems to work well. Once I know system is running right i will try without breakout point and see if it really works! This design is pretty easy to make also.

OK tonights run had it's problems! Once I got the coil outside I am guessing the tuning shifted quite a bit as it would. retuned roughly and wound the coil up. The toroid is causing some problems. fine at power levels used yesterday but much more and the primary to secondary flashovers started. I thought these were due to tuning off and indeed I think they were but not for usual reasons.

When I built toroid I ran out of one length of pipe so joined with some foil tape. Well when running higher power it started arcing at this point and the whole coil tune would change and output drop. Also got arcing between turns which suggests the spacing is too wide resulting in the toroid not behaving consistently. I will try joining better at break and see if this helps.

i think coupling is far too tight also I think along with crappy aligator clip on primary not giving good connection.

Still something to work on ready for weekend run as it's too late when dark to run during week really.

I may knock up ducting toroid just to prove it's not other problems
