I have learned that the best way to protect your stuff is to a) make it look dangerous or b) make it look worthless.

When I was about 8 our house was broken into. They only went for money and jewelry hence my mom’s jewelry gone and my dad’s watches gone. They left the TV, n64(top of the line back then), comp, ect.

I really feel for you man.

I've spent years collecting junk till now. I'd be totally broken if my comp/digital projector were stolen. Not to mention my dad would hit the ceiling if his escher were gone.

I hope you can recover the loss soon.

Guys! I know you are not being serious, but it always sobers me to see intelligent guys turning mindless sadistic when something like this happens. The guy who broke in probably has to eat, maybe he has got a family and certainly he has not got a job, otherwise he would not be stealing your stuff (which is probably junk to him anyway). So instead of thining of painful ways to kill him, thinking of ways to prevent people from getting into hopeless situations like that in the first place is going to help YOU too, in the end.
Funny how nobody complains about paying taxes, which add up to much more money than the occasional burglary, and get blown in pointless wars - also without YOUR consent.

Well, enough ranting, after all I am only a left-wing wannabe, blowing my money on expensive toys and caring shit about a better world, so I better shut up smile

First of all, I'm sad to hear that desmo got burgled. Now a word from your moderators:
Sadistic punishments for housebreakers are off-topic. So is politics, and in particular, the subject of whether certain wars are worth spending taxpayers' money on. 4hv has a huge readership from all over the globe who all disagree violently on this subject and it seems impossible to have any constructive debate on it.

He has to choose to eat, yes. It is not his liberty to eat at Desmogod's expense. His need does NOT correspond to what other people provide. His whims do not entitle him to unearned product! Stopping "people like him [thieves]" getting into hopeless situations is not Desmogod's job! It's the job of "people like him [thieves]" and then the police, or along those lines.. =P

I have to mention, Desmogod, when my factory was broken into, I was worried about the crims returning. I asked people for tips, and apart from the usual "shotgun-above-door-with-string" feedback, guys like Carbon_Rod had some very good advice, including:

- on computers/laptops you can install a wireless "roll call" program, which will "call home" each time it's turned on or connected to the net. It could e.g. send its own IP, name of network it's on, etc...
- with UV-sensitive markers, dope the screens/cases with serial #s, asset #, your drivers license # etc... makes it obvious well after the event if it was stolen...

It's still a crying shame you lost so much... I sympathise with you.

How's the ladyfriend handling it? rolleyes

Desmo, I sympathise. Having stuff ripped off by scumbags really is frustrating. One of our jobsites got hit late in December. They took whole gang-boxes, including my personal tools. I've replaced them, of course, but I remember well the anger and frustration. Several tradesmen lost a day or two of work (and therefore pay) while big tools and material were re-ordered. Anyone without insurance was out money for tools as well. Some of those guys have families to feed.

Bullshit. I've been homeless and jobless at the same time. There are literally HUNDREDS of food & shelter options that do not involve crime. I doubt heavily that the thief was hungry or familial. I rather suspect that they were strung out and wanted drug money. Only scumbags break into homes. Decent folk just don't do that.

When was the last time you had the opportunity to VOTE for whether or not your home or car would be broken into? And I, for one, complain vociferously about taxes and their misuse - I just don't bog this board down with my political views. I guess that means I'd better shut up now.

Thanks for all your comments guys, unfortunately I am uninsured, but such is life. Yes, I have to eat and feed myself too, at MY expense. I've been down and out too, but never robbed someone else to feed myself.
It's nasty to lose the stuff, but it is only $$$, It's more a pain losing my PC with all my diagrams etc etc on it :(
Oh well, such is life.

Good to have some support, thingmaker3 ;)

If I've got anything useful to say, it probably goes like this:

- Desmogod, I missed you and it's good to have you back (and did you get my email on IGBT gatedriving?)
- Criminals are exactly that. Not "underpriveleged" or "financially challenged but well-intentioned". They are PARASITES.
- I'm having a minute's silence for desmo's variac... his PC... his components... his UCCs and FETs from the bulk buy... in fact, I've just committed to not talking for half an hour. Probably about long enough for this thread to be locked wink
