Beyond awesome Steve!!
I think everyone wants to build a drsstc now if they haven't already
and audio modulate it. I sure do, but a long way to go for me.
Thought it was an outdoor rave for a minute, has that feel about it.
Did you use the opto coupling again like the one you helped design for
the Geek Group? I saw it on Youtube the other day.
Brilliant! Bloody beautiful. Love your work!!

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Yes, i used fiber optic cable to connect to the coil.

Progress: ordered up some more fiber Tx and Rx. Got serial communication to the AVR working and starting on MIDI routine.

Still looking for cool MIDI stuff to play, so suggestions are still welcome. In fact, if anyone here is good at editing midi files, send me anything thats 1 or 2 channel, single note per channel stuff (yes, pretty limiting). Also, i prefer working in the lower octaves, MIDI notes 36 to 72, thats low C at 62hz to high C at 523hz.

Link2

I might be able to go higher if i reduce the pulse width to lower the duty cycle... still debating that one in my head.

Steve, nothing topps Sprach Zarathustra. Separate that into 2 channels, and you'll captivate everyone.

Thats exactly what i had in mind. I think i have a recording of it somewhere around here. Its also simple enough to pull it off with just 2 channels i think (or hope!).

Maybe this is a dumb question, but what prevents you from simply playing a .WAV file into it? Or plugging in a microphone and reading the Ten Commandments into it?

Cheers,

Wow, that is something else! These musical coils are really catching on, hopefully before long there will be a concert at every teslathon smile

Anyway, as regards using audio as a source... Because it's a DRSSTC, you'd need some fairly advanced signal processing to render an audio file into pulses suitable for driving an interrupter, and even then it can't be done (that I know of) without introducing a lot of audible distortion, for anything except simple waveforms.

We can play 6 notes at a time but we cheated by using 6 coils... Link2

It does work with the outputs of all 6 musical interrupters OR'd into a single DRSSTC driver, but playing a big chord just pops the fuse.

In this demo Chris Boden says you can play chords with it, how does that work?

Steve,

Congratulation with your music coil, and welcome in the group who has one. Well, I`ve got 6 but that is due to my stubbornness and Steve Conner`s ingenuity.

At first, when this thread emerged, I felt a great surge of jealousy and I guess it is here to stay, because that big singing coil of yours shure kicks ass!

Cheers, Finn Hammer
