I know what you mean Part Scavenger, My 1.25" coil and my 2" coil were wound buy hand. For now I'm just going to see how well it works with just a threaded rod and 2 chairs, now the agonizing part...waiting for the wire to get here.

It depends, winding a regular SGTC secondary with ~24 gauge wire is easy, I did my 4" by 20" one in like an hour and a half. The problem is those low frequency secondaries for solid state coils, there its just a pain in the ass to see if the wire overlaps because the wire itself is hair thin. My 2000 turn DRSSTC secondary took life 5 hours.
The setup I use is very simple. I just put a metal rod through my spool, with two mid-size NIB magnets on each end. One is anchored to the metal support of my shelves, the other is stuck to and old computer power supply, so the spool can spin freely. For tension, I let the spool brush against the shelf it sits on by lowering the magnets slightly.
This would be better explained by a pic, but I don't have one right now.

I really like the idea of using a microwave oven turntable motor for turning the coil. Presumably you can vary the speed by using a variac? Can you make it stall by holding the spindle?
This is a very well timed thread as I need to wind the secondary for my DRSSTC.
