That's what most people do, and with the large magnifiers that people like Wild Bill Emery build, they need to be under oil. You're right though, it is a lot of work. Mine will only be small, although i'll be feeding it with a 15kV60mA NST, i should be able to get away with the mica insulation. One thing I do wonder about though is the quenching problem, do I need a rotary, or will a many sectioned vacuum gap suffice?

Well, that problem of primary to secondary arcing is a real ...problem. I had three layers of 0.38mm mica sheet between the primary and secondary, mind you, it was a coupling factor of 5 or 6, and those arcs just passed right through that sheet. I spent a lot of time winding and vanishing that secondary, and now it is pitted, runs were approx. 1 sec long. Very annoyed that the idea of the mica sheet wasn't all it would be, but not deterred! I will try some poly sheet as well to stem off the arcs. Unfortunately, my variac died so it is full power only to see the effects.

Model 5M magnifier from "Tesla Research" used a flat coil primary and a mid sized secondary- 12" X 25"- wrapped with 16AWG stranded wire -the output coupled a 4" X 35" Secondary wrapped with 27AWG. At 2.5 kVA they sparks were out past 10ft. Again the switching of the inductance plays a major role in increasing voltage and spark length.

Yes, Richard Hull uses the analogy of ringing a bell. "Tesla gives us an important hint as to the inductance of the extra coil. He says that the extra coils momentum, (inductance), must preponderate over that of the secondary. This makes sense too. We are striking a bell, (the resonator) with a clapper, (the driver). A 12 ounce silver bell would be ill served by a one ton clapper. The inductance of the resonator should be at least three times that of the secondary. We don't want the driver overpowering and swamping the resonator."
