You know, being forced by hunger to do such risky things has nothing to do with being stupid or not. Its just tragedy.
Uh, let me make this clear -- the man wasn't forced to do anything. Hunger does not force people to steal. People choose to steal.

3. He might not be able to understand that there is somethig dagerous up there and whoever put up the poles are likely responsible for what happened.
"Whoever put up the poles" is providing a life-giving and absolutely critical service to the society. One big problem with the modern world is the perpetual demonization and portrayal of scientists and engineers (and any large companies that employ them) as scum that wants to "play god". We have all probably noticed the shift away from personal responsibility towards big litigation.
If I ran a power company and you said that starving people were 'forced' to steal my copper and that it was my responsibility they were electrocuted, I'd wind the company up, and you can starve in the dark.

EasyVoltResearch: Not sure how you went from an adult climbing a utility pole to a child in a lions cage... but whatever.... yeah... poor kid, kids aren't usually expected to "know better" if they're young enough. Now from the lions perspective....
And I agree that the actual crime of stealing copper doesn't deserve a death sentence. All I'm saying is that individuals have to be responsible for themselves after a certain point.
they put the HV stuff at the top of a wooden pole that is intentionally made hard to climb, is commonly known to be dangerous (even stupid people know that...), it hums and glows....honestly, is your first thought, as an adult, to go up there and mess with it?
Most utility companies even go so far as to clearly mark in multiple languages the danger of messing with high voltage equipment, including warning against climbing poles.
So yeah, I have no problem saying good riddance to excessively stupid people.
Bjørn: 1, what could possibly up there for him to repair, and even then, he should have known better. If i told you to stick your hand in a dark box that's making whirring sounds and vibrating, would you?
2. You may have a point.... but still, that's a much larger issue, and you don't see this level of stupid every day. Also, it doesn't matter how good the schools are if as kid never goes.
3, If he didn't know it was dangerous he would have been extremely retarded and should have had someone with him as a chaperon. the utility companies make a pretty solid effort to keep people from getting up on a pole, and there are warnings.... I just don't see how he could be sane and not know.
Madgyver: Sorry to contradict you, but even people in America have bigger problems than trying to figure out what size their big mac meal is gonna be. Granted, there ARE benefits to being in an industrialized first world nation as opposed to being in poverty in the 3rd world, but you can't help where you're born. I don't care what your position in life is... if you resort to stealing and violence you are a criminal that deserves little or no sympathy.
*sigh*
....stupid people who die of their own stupid devices.... it sucks... but how should we legislate kid gloves for everyone to protect the few? Where do we stop? personally I already feel we've gone too far in protecting people from themselves.

Funny you should bring up the lion analogy, EVR
<samsim> I heard about this guy who broke into a lion's den at the zoo <samsim> and got mauled <samsim> and people were talking about how there should have been better defences put up to prevent people getting into the cage <samsim> a friend of mine suggested setting up some kind of deterrent <samsim> for example, putting some sort of fierce animal in the cage, which would attack anybody who climbed in (bash.org)

I don't say, that this particular guy did this because he needed food, but in most parts of the world thats the case.
Do you even care to read the WHOLE post, before replying? About being forced to steal or not: That's philosophy bullshit from someone who was never in that situation.
Again: I didn't say, thats okay to steal or do risky things. I didn't say that stealing your ohhh so precious copper cables is a right thing to do. But I DO SAY that some of you guys have strange perception of the world. BP your talking about scum "playing god", thats okay if you think that. BUT who made YOU a judge, who might give capital punishment?
I agree that criminals don't deserve sympathy as such. Still death isn't something that someone should wish for another person. Nor should we find pleasure or entertainment in it. If not, would it be okay for you to be killed by me if you walk over my grass?
