I agree with you Firkragg. We need to keep things in perspective...as tempting as it is to entertain violent thoughts against petty thieves and vandals. Graffiti "artists" do not deserve death, even if their "tags" look ugly. (Some are actually quite talented artists who just need guidance toward more constructive expressions of their art.)

Matt...you are a good bloke, but you need to realise that in a world going crazy, we really need to try to keep things in their perspective and try to deal with negative aspects of our societies with firm compassion and solutions based on critical analysis (that seems so lacking in our politicians)....

Had this young man been channeled into a more constructive way of expressing himself, he would not have had to pay the ultimate penalty for his indescretion...

Cheers!

Bill, without wishing to be smited for going off-topic, I do believe I have the correct end of the stick. Some people are incorrigible and recalcitrant, and I feel anxious at the idea of having to find ways to 'guide' such people.

I think it's fair to say this: (I sent a PM to Firkragg to the same effect, to keep it out of the forums)

Good people and bad people can make mistakes.

When godawful things happens to good people, they have my sympathy.
When they happen to bad people, they don't have my sympathy.

Yes, I personally entertain violent thoughts -- quite possibly because I have personally been on the receiving end of pointless vandalism, burglary and hospitalisation. My skewed perspective comes from my experience (or lackthereof, if you want to see it that way).

If the young gentleman's rejection of guidance (realisation of trespassing, signs, warnings, walls, barbed wire, fines, etc, etc, etc) and his (knowingly inappropriate) "self-expression" (as coined by sympathisers) resulted in his demise... I cannot think what guidance would 'make good' such a person. The facilities and the programs are there -- school activities/counsellors, scouts, youth groups, community sports teams, etc etc etc! If that's not enough... what is?

Perhaps I will come to my senses sometime... or perhaps the world will turn to shit before then anyway. tongue

There is a lot of philosphical, logical and even mathematical points to be made. I will just make some simple points.

You have established a skewed perspective, but you have not established any validity except personal gratification.

You also make the assumption that you yourself is not quilty of a sin of comparable moral magnitude. I am pretty sure it is possible to find at least 3 ways where some people would wish the same upon you because their perspective is different than yours.

Matt,
I think my main question to you last post would be:
"Can you, by reading a news report, look into that young man's heart and mind and judge him good or evil?" I cannot.

Having been on the receiving end of house burglars a couple of times; yes, I feel more violated by their invasion of my personal space
than their stealing of my property....howver, I do not think that warrants their death. (A good thrashing with a rubber hose would be enuf... ;)

The founders of the Unitd States would seem to agree when they drafted the 8th amendment to the Constitution:

wrote ...

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

May we show as much wisdom in our daily lives!

I was just wondering, do you think his parents will sue? I mean its not anybody’s fault except his own but sometimes people can get emotional and play the blame game. I don't think he knew all of the dangers and even if he did I don't think he would understand, I mean how many times have you seen a movie which involved dangerous power stations and yet the actors run all over them. Yea movies aren’t real but the special effects are there to make it as real as possible. I think a better warning would include why series injury/death will occur from attempting to touch power equipment. Or it may just encourage vandalizers to take the risks.

Well, getting over a 15-foot wall topped with razor wire and thinking theres nothing dangerous behind it is still pretty stupid.
It's insignificant if he did knew about all the dangers or not, the acces was clearly denied and the
substation was marked as beeing dangerous (because it carries HV).

Common, what could have been done additionaly? Guards? Landmines? Sentry guns? Cloaking device?

Yet it would be sooo typical if the family sues the company.

Nope, it looks like they won't.

If I were the company I would send the parents the cleanup bill, the bill for the substation repairs, and fine the family for the loss of revenue from their customers during the power outage.

I wouldn't be surprised if this eventually made it into the Darwin Awards - it has that ring to it.

I won't say the guy deserved it, but if enough people do this, then some of them will draw the short straw. With a little luck, hopefully this can act as a warning to people who tag and vandalise in dangerous locations.

Actually, I agree that many graffiti taggers are indeed excellent artists, but it would be much nicer to see them demonstrate their talents legally in sanctioned places, or on their own large sheet boards.

My condolences to the family.

+1 on Bjørn's post. Electrocution by 100,000 volts doesn't strike me as a fitting punishment for graffiti. Sadly though, high voltage lines will fry you whether you deserved to die or not.

Maybe we should have a "10 Reasons not to climb into a substation" sticky thread to try and educate the public...
