I found that the side of the gap without caps got much warmer than the side with caps (about room temperature on one side and guessing about 300 F. on the other.)
DC arcs can exhibit this to a large degree. Seems the terminal connected to the negative of the supply often gets much hotter than the positive. It has something to do with bombardment of the negative terminal with positive ions. As to your spark gap heating, its possible that you have a net DC offset (some anomoly with the charging circuit?) on your tank circuit. Or, id guess that maybe your spark gap isnt perfectly symmetric.
