I've just come back from an interesting temporary change of scenery.

Australia has one nuclear reactor at a nuclear science research facility at Lucas Heights in New South Wales.

As is easy to understand, these people have a big PR budget and invited a whole bunch of science students to visit, paying for airfares and everything. I got to go (wee!).

Something you guys would find interesting is the mulit-MV VDGs they use for their particle accelerators. I got to see a 5.2MV VDG, albeit in a huge metal case like an enormous bomb and packed with SF6. As a geek it was still something to stand next to the thing. I did get to see a smaller ~3MV VDG out the back of one room with the cover off.

Even those with only a small appreciation for the nerdy liked the irradiation chamber. It had a rack of Co-60 at the bottom of a well-like pit of water. The water was glowing blue with Cerenkov radiation. (They leave things in that room, seal it off and a motor raises the Co-60 out of the water which floods the room with gamma rays.)

Unfortunately, I have no photos. It's the not the kind of place for happy-snaps. Another student was taking a photo, standing outside the facility and the Australian Federal Police came over and stopped him.

Seems the Gods still have a sense of humor. After intentionally blowing off the promotion test this past spring (long story, but I neither need or want the extra stripe) the results came back today, and I not only passed, I scored startlingly high.

I guess I'm now an NCO. Go figure.

Oh don't worry about security clearance, I'm sure this picture was in the news :) I know we do work with Lockheed Martin; I'm sure we do with Northrop Grumman.
