I had some problems with ICSP using a JDM. I had to turn it down to a really low clock, otherwise I didn't get enough power to program it. It was suggested to me to externally power it instead of using the computer's COM port's power, but I haven't tried that yet. I recently picked up a ICD-2 which I'm hoping will solve a lot of my problems after talking to some Microchip people at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose.
careful using external power and ICSP with a JDM. The JDM uses negitive voltage for the ground, and the ground (on the computer) as the 5v supply for the chip. That way, the positive voltage from the serial port is high enough for VPP. If you hook up a external power supply, make sure it is isolated. Some wall-warts are, some arent, check with your multimeter beforehand.
