it could be possible if you used dc resonant charging and hook one side of the spark gap, a speaker like assembly and as it vibrates back and forth the bps would change thus constantly changing the frequency and if tuned right you should be able to hear some audio on the spark

If you were going to modulate the gap directly, I think the idea of using an ignition coil to trigger the gap would be better.
The idea though is to have a magnetic switch on the ground wire, I believe they use to do this in the early days of radio. Question is though, would you need more than a few turns on the ground wire to be able to do this? or would it need quite a few turns therefore affecting the secondary tuning?!?
How much current would you need to do it on a medium sized coil?

No.

Uh, yes it is.
In fact, Nikola Tesla himself was the first to audio modulate a Tesla coil more than 100 years ago. He even has several
patents on it.

I'm gonna try audio modulation with a variable speed rotary gap in a few weeks (if I get into it). I've designed a quite simple parallel port interface which can be used to control the motor.

Let's see what can throw together!

possible, and I did it with a triggered gap on accident once... so it should be possible to make tunes if care in design is taken... I never pursued it though, as the frequency response would be limited by the gap duration... maybe a vacuum chamber gap with the trigger transformer and the main capacitor at low values?

very interesting, as hard drive heads are fast enough and should be isolated from their supply to protect the platters, and they move fast enough (in some cases) that it would still be decent quality... I would love to see it, and if you "officially" decide not to try it, then I might.
