I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but I use a hot air station to melt the solder paste for surface mounts. If the pins are that small it will be difficult to hit it right with a solder iron. The air station works perfectly each time.

What do you mean by solder paste, do you mean flux or do you mean the water-base "liquid solder" for surface mount that you have to keep in the refrigerator? Also, how did you get your hands on a hot air station?

I guess you got the CSI825. Could a person do everything with the basic package or would he end up having to buy extra nozzles? I think I may go on ebay and look for used units.

Heat guns can really heat components to very high temperatures. I would be wary of doing this unless you can be absolutely sure that you don't overheat the component.

I didn't get anything fancy or any other extra nossles. My station came with three different nozzle sizes. It has worked great each time and I have soldered very small components - about 0.5-1mm components.

I've used a hot air gun with great sucess for desoldering smt components - but not tried it for soldering. As long as you heat the component slowly, it should be ok - because the board is originally made in an oven anyway. I've salvaged expensive microcontrollers from work using this technique, and it's why I prefer smt!
