Nice work with the Lobe strobes. You have learned how to commercialise an idea well.
Here is my answer to them.
These LED glasses had a variable rate of rotation with 2 LED's being on at any one time for each side. This model was made in about 1981. It is interesting watching them circulate though a disco from person to person. I haven't lost them yet. They use a 555 timer driving a 4017 CMOS decade LED driver with each leg driving 4 standard low intensity LED's (?20 mcd) with each side rotating in opposite directions and cycling through different colours. There is a speed control to go from standstill to continuously on. It takes a lot of interconnections around the frames. If I was to remake them I would use a smaller rechargeable battery and high intensity LEDs. My colored rings are, of course, the appropriate fashion accessory for the glasses.

I sold one for $50 and a bottle of champagne. See, I too got a handsome profit from these.

Peter

Come on guys, surely someone has the skills to make a mini lightning plate that fits Sam's hoop earring. The chicks will love it.

One thing I always wondered: If you get tired of those ear plugs and stop wearing them, will your ear lobes go back to normal? Or will they still be like that when you'r a middle aged bank manager? suprised It was a line of thought like that that stopped me getting tattoos when I was a mosher.

Peter:

Cool glasses! I bet Elton John, even approaching 50 years old, would wear them on stage if you mailed a pair to him! Btw, I think your green ring on the link is an example of an item that has market potential (if its not already been done, I've not been watching that market for a few years). Spencer Gifts and Wal-Mart are examples of stores that are likely to distribute a green LED ring especially around the Holiday season, IF your cost of production can be low enough to allow you a reasonable profit. Nice idea. CM smile

Steve,

I actually have met the inventor of those lightning plates. they're pretty simple to build if you have access to a neon shop.

break one apart, get the little phosphor coated balls (or make your own little ones, again assumeing you have access to a neon shop)

Make your "stage" from 3 sheets of glass - one cut into a ring, and fuse the whole thing together with a small tubulation point on the back or side somewhere.

suck the whole down to 0.05 tor or so, back fill with argon and neon, seal the tubulation and apply 5kvac or so. a 12v Li-ion cell phone battery would give you plenty of charge for an evening out.

...heck I might try this when I have some time... what size holes are those?

-Doug

TDU, I see your LED glasses and raise you:
1175567187 5 FT22335 Light 002

I suppose it is not as fancy as yours, but it consists of 9 under-powered 1W Luxeons and is very useful as illumination.

There is also a blue one which fits on the other lens. Together they make for much better color rendering, but they are rather awkward to use since they require separate battery packs which must go in one's pockets.

Where I work the rest rooms have blue fluoro lights to make it more difficult for druggies to find veins to shoot up.
Your glasses could restore the colour balance......
