This is not the issue, being raided as a suspected terrorist (yes I also have various restricted chemicals like ammonium persulphate, acetone, baking powder etc) and/or dealer is.

Question is, should I make the Police aware of my research to avoid any such misunderstanding, or keep quiet and hope they ignore me?

I wouldn't worry about it, unless you keep cough syrup with the chemicals and make international calls.

Firstly, you don't know all the facts or circumstances surrounding the case. I'm sure there is a bit more to the story than what was printed.

Secondly, i have to question why you brought this up in the first place. Scales are not illegal. If you aren't doing anything illegal with them, then there is no reason to worry.

Finally, you don't have to tell the police squat, nor do you have to consent to a search of your property or whatever. I once had a police officer pull me over on a traffic stop and asked me to step out of the car. The FIRST thing i did when i got out of the car was LOCK the car.

Everything can be considered illegal from the wrong point of view. Even orogramming a microcontroller with a led display (it may look as a bomb timer) or buying some acetone and hydrogen peroxyde for etching and photoresist cleaning. It is not the thing itself illegal but the wrong use is. Coilguns are not illegal, except if you keep shoting on the public ground, may be considered a weapon though (especially if the LOOK as a weapon). More than 40% of people have in his house materials that can be used to produce explosives without even being aware of it. Another example: some gps navigation systems are banned in swiss because are used to remainder you the position of the speed camera radars, again is not the thing itself, but the use you make of it. P2P sharing programs aren't illegal, it is illegal to share copyrighted items etc...

ps: here in italy are more concerned about software piracy and car speeders than other things.

EVR, while this "Finally, you don't have to tell the police squat, nor do you have to consent to a search of your property or whatever. " may be true in the US it's not relevant to Conundrum's situation in the UK nor to the situation of the bloke who was arrested.
The police don't bother to turn up unless they already have a search warrant.
