I write this reply with a mixture of emotions.
Firstly pride and pleasure that many on 4HV have received my recent work with interest and enthusiasm.
Secondly, that of some sadness and regret that this work has in some way crossed the line of acceptibility for 4HV. Which is why I pulled the "Aura of Sauron" thread.
I feel a little like I have been seduced by the dark side of the big world out there in the last 3 weeks. No doubt influenced by the 50K hits to my site and possibly 500k views of my photos over hundreds of sites from Fark, Digg, Hackaday, big Russian and Japanese sites and many blogs and forums. Many sites like Break.com were unacknowleged and initially invisible to me until others reported it to me.
Chris Russell has generously kept up with the bandwidth until his 330GB final limit. I have reached 320GB with 2 days to go this month.
It is a whole new world out there. Like a Russian site with 370 replies in a few days. (I presume they were saying nice things). Many replies from other sites have been as you would expect from a non technical population but there are many who come out of the woodwork who have built coils and can appreciate the technical aspects. I have now a supply of stock replies for the tens of forums that I have joined.
So it has been a wild ride but it will come to an end.

And safety? All Tesla coils are dangerous and should be made by qualified people who build it and run it in a approved area and have proper liability cover (= very few people). I have had many more "close calls" in 4 years of cycling than my one "close call" with HV in the same period. But, no, it's not as safe as collecting stamps.
HV still scares me in proportion to my perception of it's lethality. The "aura" picture had a rotating rod that due to tuning and losses could barely manage a 1 foot spark. Any spark contact shots were tested by building up from low levels. It was of low lethality from my point of view.

So I guess my focus on 4HV has passed with a little regret.
I thank everyone for their support.
TDU

Well, I wouldn't say it has crossed the line of acceptability at all, just that we aren't nearly as impressed with it as the average noob on the average forum chosen at random from the Internet will be. To Joe Public, a man with a Tesla coil might as well have stolen fire from the gods. But we all have Tesla coils at home and have seen it all before. I hope I'm not getting old and cynical! :-o

Well I for one find new ways to show off tesla coils interesting, after all I've seen plenty of (pictures of) streamers/arcs/sparks/etc from common torroid toploads over the last few years.

Funny that Joe Public hasn't responded similarly to the 11,000 images of Tesla coils accessible on Google images of Tesla coils.
I understand you are not impressed but just where have you seen it all before?
No-one said you are getting old...

You've got plenty of projects that are much more than streamers and sparks. I know we haven't seen it all before.

I think it is a nice picture too.

There are reasons why I personally don't think it is a great picture. It is a special effect and I am sure if Steve really wanted to show off he could have carted around several of his coils in a two hour long exposure and lit up half of Glasgow.

So the special effect in itself is not very impressive when you know how it works in detail and know how to recreate it. When you ignore the special effect the picture itself is nothing special.
