This morning I sat down with a calculator and actually figured up the cutoff frequency of the filter (I probably should have done it before building the thing) designed by Terry Fritz (of which I am running a version without the MOVs).
When you remove the MOVs, do you have to do anything else to the filter to run it without MOVS?

I have not had any troubles with it, but as Steve said, it couldn't hurt to up the caps. My NST has been doing just fine behind a standard Terry filter minus MOVS.
I have all my grounds tied together, period. So basically I have two ground paths. One is through the mains ground and the other is through the 2.5' stake in the ground. The stake I believe does most of the actual work. In fact, I kept blowing NICs in my firewall until I tied the mains ground to the stake. I have a sneaking suspicion my apartment building is very poorly grounded anyway.

I can't find the 0.0033uF capacitors anywhere, so I was going to sub them with these: Will those be ok? I was going to use 4 of them on each side of the filter which will give the same capacitance as with the 0.0033uF caps, but a higher voltage rating, 12kV.
Why does the cap have to be bigger if I remove the MOVs? Without the MOVs the frequency of the filter is 290kHz, which I thought would be fine.
