To all, Ebay is experiencing some hacking problems right now.

Do not bid on any 24 hr. listing or you will loose your money.

Be careful.

I thought that 20w fiber coupled 808nm laser system for $200 seemed too good to be true mistrust

Although it seems sorta odd that the hackers would want to use paypal...

Hazmatt, where did you find out about this? Can you post a source for your claims please? I can't find any news about it on security sites, and it's kind of odd that you're the only person that knows about it.

Yeah, sounds bogus to me. No word of any problems on EBAYs announcement page and i was using ebay last night without any problems.

Yes, man, state your sources!

I have had one phishing attack personally about some unpaid stuff. Ignored it and reported it to eBay.

I hear Paypal are bringing out some little gizmo that reassigns a confirmation code every 20 seconds and Australia is one of the 3 trial countries.

Ebay has had a spate of troubles with poor password security. I've seen a couple articles in the last month or two regarding people hijacking ebay accounts, listing a mess of auctions for high end electronics stuff, then deleting the account once they've got money in hand.

I cant find any links to the articles now, but I'm pretty sure one of them was on LifeHacker. Unfortunately that site is blocked here. There was some stink a few months ago about ebay ignoring similar security issues, despite glaring evidence that it was a problem. Caught atleast a couple blurbs on the news about it.

I'm on the Yahoo group Tekscopes, because I needed help with getting the Tekmate working.
That's where I first got alerted to the scams going on.

Here's some proof: Link2
They are multiple listings of the same equipmet. This is not unusual as far as fraud would be concerned. What was unusual was a huge amount of electronics being sold for $200 in 24 hour auctions by people who don't sell electronics.
Link2
This was a hijacked account, but it doesn't seem to be working now.

These were all $200 listings for 24 hours only.

The Tekscopes group concluded that phishing is the root cause of these actions. Users are prompted by mail to enter their information and as a result their account information is stolen and abused. What we see are multiple listings of the same string of equipment for 24 hour auctions. This will probably change in the near future though to more incidious tactics.
