"Theres a similar project from Asus for a bit higher price but much more stylish and more "real laptop" -like:" I am looking for a cheap portable labtop and this one would be really useful. Thats if a version of windows will work on it.

Microsoft does not have an academic pricing policy in Burkina Faso. Neither is there any power to run a $0 laptop if one was available. If it was available it would not last a week for the intended use. The $100 laptop is meant for people living in places where a school has about as much money to spend as the average student on this forum spends on beer and drugs in a month.
I have read the design documents and it is clear that it is possible to make a $100 laptop that does everything what most people would ever need for serious use. There is not even a need to be innovative.
What I question is to use of a power hungry and expensive AMD processor with the worst architecture known to man and the use of extremely inefficient software like Linux
I believe the laptop has a crank on the side to provide power. not kidding. Linux is not inefficient, and AMD processors work faster at a given speed than Intel processors. they are kind of power hungry though.

Well, I've gone and done it now and bought my own black 4GB 702 Surf Eee PC, £250 all in (including next day delivery so that I could mess about with it this weekend).
It has got a 4GB solid state drive (and I've added a 2GB SD card in the built in slot), 3 x USB 2.0, VGA output for dual monitor support, RJ45 Ethernet, Mic in and headphones out, integrated webcam and speakers. It is completely silent, I haven't heard the fan come on yet.
The 800x400 px screen is small but perfectly usable, the keyboard is also very small and i think that typing is definitely going to take some practice with my big hands.
However the portability is great, it fits into my man bag no problems and it is going to be invaluable when it comes to business trips, seminars and meetings.
The Xandros linux operating system is easy to use, and enabling the "full mode" instead of the basic (but extremely usable) easy mode, give you more control options including a root terminal and better controls.
I'm well chuffed with it, and I'm going to spend many happy evenings tinkering.
