Powdered iron (yellow/white, type 26) have a distributed gap so avoid 'gap effects' which are likely to be an issue in this circuit (high power).
They are tedious to wind, but that's the fun..... this one (on the right) is 10mH and good for ten amps or more.....2.5mm cross section on a 76mm double thickness toroid..... 500grammes of copper. the one on the left is 250g of copper and only 1.75mH..... The more even windings and no gaps on the larger one contribute a lot in my opinion, although it will have higher capacitance, but I use these for smoothing power supplies, so a bit of capacitance isn't a problem.....
