Try and find an old Siliconix applications book or app noted on the U310 which is the same as the J310

here's a mixer design using two U310s:

Thanks everyone! Parts have been ordered, I'll update the thread once the testing begins.

Regarding the SA602; Yeah, I found lots and lots of circuits using the NE version which is no longer in production. Unfortunately the SA only comes in SMT form and I'm not equipped to do SMT board construction. A single resistor or capacitor in the largest footprint I can handle if I absolutely have to, but even that is a challenge.

Thanks for the book recommendation and the JFet example!

Hi,
I thought the signal from a SSTC might be rather large. Would an attenuator be better at the input of the mixer.

In the vicinity of the coil, yes, far too strong, but as a TC is an exceptionally poor radiator at far field I'm not expecting any front end overload issues.

I can pick up the 3rd and 5th harmonic on an analog AM radio pretty easily within the house, but trying a portable digital tuning radio yielded no results even one meter outside the property line. I suspect sympathetic power line emission (i.e. SSTC feeding AM over the power lines of the house) is why I could pick it up inside the house but not outside. It could just be the digital tuning and modern selectivity means I couldn't do slope detection on the digital portable radio, so I'm going to pick up a cheap portable analog radio and re-test. I'll also use this same radio as the receiver the upconverter will be merged with.

Update!

Success! The upconverter works! I tested it on breadboard with an RTL-SDR as a receiver (which has it's own 100MHz internal upconverter, allowing it to receive 100KHz-1.7GHz).

Congratulations!
This reader wouldn't've thought a radio receiver could be done on plugboard. Duh, why not?

Thanks!

I also was able to receive Sydney, Australia's DGPS beacon with it:

Very well done on that!:) I think the 136kHz amateur band is very interesting and thought I might make a direct conversion receiver for it one day. It wouldn't be hard to make a seriously stable VFO at such a low frequency, and so make a very useful CW receiver for not very much money.
