Not sure if you checked out the stickies but if you're going to be using bricks, you might want to read these threads.

When in doubt simply unplug anything you don't want to chance having to replace. Note about garage operation; garage door openers can be fried even if unplugged - watch those streamers!

As long as the coil's frequency is lower and the mains earth isn't high impedance (to the coil frequency, not to DC) you can use mains earth for all grounding, at least for a quick test. If you reach full power and notice poor output along with racing or primary arcs then you know your secondary base is seeing a high impedance and it's time to go with plan B.

OK, thats interesting to learn!
So i should be sweet running my IGBT's up to 1000A.

Only issues i can see is if i run the coil at too high a power and find that i get too many primary strikes, that - and drawing too much at the outlet.

I dont know what options there are other than installing a high rate mains outlet for my coil, but that doesnt help me if im planning to take it to various locations.

I will try mains earth to start with and look at a separate ground after initial testing.

I cant wait to see how this coil goes!

The last thing I would recommend to anyone is to use the mains ground as an RF ground. Do it only if you want to see tens of thousands of volts dropped on the PE line.
The only place where it could be safe is at the earthing rod of the house, directly if you want to use the mains earth, or the lightning protection line outside of the house.
