The schematic looks wrong, with an inverted zener, inverted bipolar transistors, and a mosfet connected just to a capacitor.

Agree'd on the zener being backwards and BJTs should be swapped. However, the fet (VT3) serves as an interrupter by disconnecting the 150V return path. I believe it's connected correctly.

Sorry for zener, forgot to mention: I had no symbol for TVS, so put ordinary zener, having in mind to edit it in Photoshop.
Actually it is 1.5ke15 and it does not matter how to put it in schematics.
About BJTs - I hardly remember actual wiring, probably you're right.
VT3 is an interrupter and disconnects oscillator's GND

I have seen this circuit used with wildly varying values for r5 and r6, how do they affect things?

R5 and R6 are setting initial gate voltage, so they affect only the starting and the only thing that matters is proportion R5/R6.
