what order of remote are we talking?
if it is just "non-contact" or within a few millimeters I see a possible application of Ti LDC1000 inductance-to-digital converters - otherwise a simple laser diode and single mode fibers can also be used to build an interferometer, removing the long second interferometer arm from the equation.
Beware of geometrical phase though, the fiber will have to be fixated.
