With 18 cap, you can't really get any long sparks in a marx as half of the voltage appears on the small spark gaps, maybe about 2-3cm. I suggest a villard cascade topology instead, with 6 series MOC as a single capacitor.

18 caps charged to even just 6kV should give him a ~100kV marx, make two towers of reverse polarity so you have +50kV and -50kV striking against each other.

They are rated only 3kVDC. I have a lot of MOC's (like 200), but several failed at 7kVDC when they were discarged rapidly. The other problem with the marx is that you immediately lose a lot of voltage in the small spark gaps.

Well what do you guys think, should I build a marx or a cap bank for can crushing, ring launching, etc. I ordered 50 2.2n 6.3kv ceramic disc caps and some resistors to build a smaller marx generator a while ago before I thought of using MOC's so I think maybe a cap bank will be more fun ; ). Anyway I'm just looking for an opinion here.

I built a ring launcher and you're going to need at least 200J to get any real action from an aluminum disk ring, that equates to 10uF at 6.3 KVDC, you only have enough caps for 110nF, so your ring probably won't leave the launcher.

The 6.3kv ceramics are for a marx generator not the ring launcher. I would use the 18 microwave caps for the ring launcher.

I used 3x 680uF 400V caps to give me 160J of energy and was fairly effective. I'd probably use 18 MO caps for something else.

I have a big 12000uF 450V electrolytic capacitor that I could use but I think it has to much inductance or something because at 70V the ring didn't even leave the launcher.

It didn't leave because that's 29.4 Joules. Try charging it to 150V next time.

I think that I'm going to make a ring launcher with the microwave caps, not a marx generator.
