Hi guys, I have 18 MOC's and I thought maybe I could use them for a marx generator, and if so would it be better to use resistors or wind some inductors. I have wire and pvc pipe to make the inductors with. What do you guys think?

Generally speaking, resistors have more losses than inductors, assuming Ohmic resistance of the inductor is negligible.

I would try it with resistors first
what sort of voltage can the caps take?
If it's about 2500dc then 18 would give you about 45kv
and say 20-30kv per cm you would get about 2cm spark length, although it would be some bang!
maybe can crushing?

Hi Blackcurrant. I wanted to use inductors because I can build them for free and I didn't want to spend a bunch on resistors. Also, the caps are slightly different values (0.65-1 uf) will that effect the operation of the marx generator. The caps are rated at 2200V AC but I will be charging them up to 8400V because they seem to take it just fine as Steve found.I'm wondering if I should just make a big capacitor bank with them instead of a marx generator?

I would think a can crusher type thing would be cheaper and easier to make.

needless to say but whatever you make will be dangerous so double check all the parts and have somebody else check the setup
try to think about if something explodes do you have protection from it?

I think you should try to build a marx generator, it takes a lot of MOCs to get a decent capacitor bank, I would have liked a little more bang from 21 capacitors in the one I built: Link2

Will the caps being different values effect the operation as a marx?

It won't really affect the operation as a marx, but as its operation connects all the caps in series, it might effect the destruction of the smallest cap, by reverse overvoltage

All MOCs have a internal bleeder resistor, it might help even the voltage and load sharing.

For the marx I'm thinking about winding 30 inductors with 24 awg wire on 1/2 inch pvc 3 inches long as I don't want to buy resistors. But then space will be a factor and I'm not sure if they will have enough inductance.
