Swapping any two phase wires should reverse the motor, easily done with a suitable relay. If you use the sense wires you need to the corresponding swap there too.
Thanks, Bjorn, I'd sort of already realised I 'should' be able to swap any two phase wires, but I'd got stuck on the 'swapping the sensor wires' bit.
The three sense wires are the same colours as the three phase wires, Blue, Green and Yellow. Is it as simple as just swapping, say, the blue and yellow connections and that's it, it will run in the opposite direction?
I don't suppose it will do any damage if I try?
EDIT: I've found a few threads like this one regarding reversing:
Ity says that generally the colours of the sensor wires don't correspond to the phase wires, and that reversing two weires works with some motors but not others.
I guess I'll just have to try it and see.
I'm going to try running this from a rectified and smoothed 24V transformer on a variac initially, so I can gradually reduce voltage to 12V for testing. It may take me a day or two until I'm happy with the setup and ready to start.
I think I'll open up one motor as well, just to have a look.
BTW, someone pointed out in the thread linked to above that it's quite easy to open these up and swap the Hall sensors around so that it runs in reverse with the original wiring intact. Apparently some of these motors have 'advance' which prevents the motor running in reverse. Apparently these motors generally have angled windings on the stator.
EDIT: I'm still reading this, but it seems to be the best guide to determining the correct wiring I've seen so far:
This page could be useful too, if only for the 'printable' 36 combination test procedure chart thingy.
