Try to revert both windings. If the transformer has a built-in diode, only one polarity works. The oscillator may be working, but the HV output is blocked by the diode. Don't connect regular meters to this device. If it happens to work, the meter may be immediately destroyed.

Still no sparks and no voltage between the HV cable and the 0 V pin. I don't understand where the problem could be.

Have you tried testing the 2N3055 as I described above?

Something like a brake light bulb or indicator bulb from a car is ideal for this.

I haven't, but I'm pretty sure it works since it becomes very hot.

Getting hot and working are very different especially with a 2N3055.

i like the 555 timer, but that may be too advanced at the moment.

If something is too hot to touch, it's too hot, and possibly damaged. It's easy to test a transistor with a ohmmeter, and some even have specific tests for diodes and HFE.

I just did a quick test using an ohmmeter, and Emitter results shorted with Collector (with about 5.5 ohms resistance), so I guess it is damaged. But how could I have damaged it? Is it possible that it came already broken when I bought it? I'll buy a new one and I'll be more careful this time.

In order to avoid any damages during preliminary tests, I’ll suggest you to improvise some sort of protection, using power resistors series on the power supply bus. For that purpose you need to have on hand few resistors, let’s say values of 2.2- 4.7 ohms /10W-25W (you may use also any available 12Vdc car headlight bulb). An electrolytic capacitor, large values 1000-2200uF/25V-35V will be required, “to filter” the power supply near to the flyback input. See the attached photo.
This circuit must be used for test purposes only, as the power dissipated in the resistors greatly reducing the output flyback voltage.
