Hello everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone knows the average recovery time of HVM12 diodes.

Searching only came up with the answer that HVM12 is a "standard recovery speed diode" and applications in 60Hz. All the datasheets I could find had no recovery time on these diodes.

I was able to get my HVM16's to work upto about 1kHz, but they'd get hot. Im not sure if that's our diodes internal heating due to capacitance at 1kHz.

i was never able to find a datasheet with max turn off/on times for the HVM series, or any series meant for 60Hz. I just think line frequency devices are never assumed to be used beyond this role.

Interesting.

Could a diode speed tester be my next project? smile

"heating due to capacitance at 1kHz."

scientificly worthy of a nobel price.

are you being facetious? I couldnt think of anything else, since HV diodes in the 90's (and now) tended to be high forward voltage and many series-ed individual diodes.

the HVM series were meant for MOV transformers for sine waves and i used them for trapazoidal / sqaure-ish wave at 1kHz.

is anyone realizing that capacitance cant generate heat -.-
Capacitance stores Energy in an electric field - that all.

The HVR-1X diodes seem to be the same thing. The datasheet mentions 50 ns of recovery time, and shows a test circuit.

Dragon64, can you share how it will be used ?

Link2 this helps.
And Link2

In any case, I think Conundrum may have a good idea, either that or choose better diodes and/or understand the circuit better. Ive series-ed many HER-108 diodes with good results. Ive done this past 28kV, I derate by 60%.
